Today I had the chance to check out the new video from Disturbed, for their new single Inside the Fire. And I must say, I really dig the song. It’s heavy, catchy, and sounds a lot like their latest stuff (when Dan Donegan decided that solos didn’t ruin the music). The lyrics really hit home with singer David Draiman, whose highschool girlfriend committed suicide. A horrific tale indeed. Which is why the content of the video surprised me.
The video begins with a heartfelt monologue from Draiman, explaining the content of the song and the video, and urging anyone “in crisis” to seek help. Cut to Draiman walking up to his apartment, entering it, seeing this mysterious Devon hanging from the ceiling, and screaming “NOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!11eleven”. I swear to God I heard the ‘eleven’ in the lyrics of the song. I was wrong, but it sure as hell rhymes with Devon.
Follow that with another maniacal laugh that sounds creepy, and by creepy I don’t mean demonic, I mean stalker-esque. The images are not moving or depressing, they’re just plain gratuitous. The song kicks in, and there’s Draiman doing a really odd dance, yelling, and throwing blood around like a child with ADD sitting in a vat of ketchup. He then washes her body, and her corpse pops out of the wall and gives him a rifle, which he sticks in his mouth, and doesn’t fire as the scene inexplicably changes to a mental hospital with Dave in a straight-jacket. Yet another really lame laugh, and star wipe and cut.
I’d like to explain it, but I just can’t. But maybe you can! www.disturbed1.com
